Mark Monnerat, the principal of Saint Joseph School in Bristol, is the 2007 – 2008 recipient of the Archdiocesan Distinguished Elementary School Principal Award. In addition, Mr.Monnerat has been nominated for the Distinguished Principal Award sponsored by the National Catholic Education Association in Washington, D.C.

For the past 36 years, Mr. Monnerat has devoted himself to the mission and ministry of Catholic school education. He began his career teaching at St.Matthew School in Forestville in 1971. After 15 years of service as a teacher, he became principal of Saint Joseph School in 1986 and is the first, and only lay principal the school has had. Beyond the role of principal, Mr. Monnerat has continued to work with students as a coach and mentor in the school’s sports program, and, in his busy schedule, finds time to fundraise for the school. Mr. Monnerat has served as an elected member of the Principal’s Advisory Council for the past four years. In addition, Mr. Monnerat frequently serves on visiting teams of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, the organization that accredits all of the Catholic schools of the Archdiocese.

“Mark provides a Catholic atmosphere which unmistakably permeates the school. He is totally dedicated to the school and to Catholic school education in this Archdiocese, At St. Joseph School, Mr. Monnerat is far more than the principal. His passion for teaching and coaching is a great asset to his role as principal of St. Joseph School. Mark Monnerat truly is a gift to Catholic school education!" said Superintendent Hoyt.
